Suffering: A Blessing?

One day, while half listening to a movie on tv, I heard a character say, "Suffering is the only cure for the ills of humanity" or something similar. Sorry, I haven't the foggiest idea what movie was on because a family member had put it on to watch, and I just happened to be in the room at the time. Anyway, this instantly stood out and caught my attention. What exactly did the writer mean by this quote , and more importantly how does this thought line up with the Word of God which is truth. I began to mull over this thought, at that point losing all focus on the movie, and going to a totally different place, deep in my thoughts and the Word.  For anyone who has ever had to put up with me spacing out like this I apologize, but whenever something catches my attention like this I am instantly drawn to learn more to hear what God is trying to tell me.

What exactly are the ills of humanity? Can suffering really cure the ills of humanity, and if so how?

First, let's address the ills: works of the flesh and attacks of the enemy by Satan and his imps.

Galatians 5:19-21

19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,
20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,
21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

Wow. That's a lot. It's serious!!

Plus, the bible warns us to be aware of the enemies attacks. Believe me, they hurt. They wound. They scar. They can kill you if you let them. Don't!!  If you haven't experienced it yet, just wait and prepare.

1 Peter 5:8

Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:

Finally, can suffering  cure the ills of humanity, and if so how?  I don't know, probably not, but it most definitely can draw us to the one who is able, Jesus. In the Word of God we find the cure to our problems and are introduced to the Great Physician, Jehovah Rapha. Through our suffering we are tried, tested, and proven, and once we come out of the fire we are made new as pure gold: priceless, valuable, and desired. Suffering builds our faith in our God, our Deliverer. We are able to look back and remember how He delivered us before and made a way out of no way the next time suffering decides to stop at our doorstep again, and believe me it will.  The moment you come out you can now stand flat footed and firm on the personal knowledge, not hearsay, that God can and will in fact carry you through every trial and every situation. Peace comes with that knowledge and understanding, and the spirit of fear (which God did not give) must flee!! Hallelujah!!  Suffering can help cure the ills of humanity by simply making us more humane. Suffering brings forth empathy for others who suffer in this world likewise, strange isn't it.  The bible instructs us to mourn with those who mourn, and our own suffering teaches us to do so with a quickness. Suffering, though not desired, can and will do a great work in our lives and the world as a whole if we allow it to do so and we will find that we are all better if we don't get bitter!!  Suffering refocuses us and drives us to our knees in prayer and supplication, and forces us to pull away from the world and our personal endeavors to simply rest in Him. In this world we suffer, it is a fact of life, but there is an answer. Cure us Lord, is our humble prayer!!

Words To Stand On...

Romans 8:17-17
17 And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.
18 For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.
2 Corinthians 4:17
17 For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory;
Romans 8:28
28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.
